My Tenchi has a really tight saya that's making drawing the sword rather dangerous. The sword will fully enter the saya with some force needed for the last inch and a half. But to draw the sword back out again requires using both hands and about 60 pounds of pull. The tight part seems to be on the inner bottom end of the saya. Has anyone else encountered a problem like this? To remedy this problem would require a mandrel with a file or scraper attached to the end and working it back and forth in the problem area. This may sound easier said than done, since I haven't found a suitable rig yet do do this. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have heard that some folks had found material stuffed into the bottoms of their saya- I guess to make the fit tighter? Whatever's in there has to be wedged pretty deep if that's the case, or, you could mimic a piston motion and continuously draw and re-sheathe, not the whole length, just 6 inches out, then back in, maybe work a bit of room in there. I don't think the wood of the saya will damage the sword in any way. Just an idea.

i had this same problem...i simply went out side cut appropriate sized branch...trimmed it down and skinned it of its bark...then i wrapped and glued sandpaper to one end...just make sure the wood you use is stiff enough that you can apply force without it bending to much...or use a metal rod...will take some time though as the process is quite slow....the same saya was also tight at the mouth...so i did the same thing to a popsicle stick and sanded out the mouth of the saya...works great but is time consuming

Think I'd try Ebon's idea first. Get yourself a coat hanger, straighten it out with a slight hook on the end of it and go fishing, see what you might dig out of there... If it is the wood then kaminoheishi's idea sounds like a good way to go... Good idea kaminoheishi!

Thanks guys. I used a coat hangar to check for any obstructions down the saya, and there weren't any. I also put a different sword that's not as wide as the tenchi into the saya and there was no problem. I will try to find a rigid metal rod or something and see if I can attach a scraper or sand paper on the end of it.

My Tenchi had the exact oppisit problem, when it came out of the box it fell right out of the saya with no resistance what so ever. It looks as if someone got overzelous with a file on the mouth. It also feels like there is somthing at the bottom of the saya, like a peice of rubber but so far I have had no luck fishing it out. A little wood glue around the mouth, dried and sanded solved the problem. I have a new saya purchaced from Cheness that my iato fits in perfect but to fit the Tenchi would take a bit of sanding. I guess the Tenchi is slightly larger.
