First off where can i get work like this done also does this practice weaken the sword in anyway?

Check out the customization subforum, a few of our guys have shortened their own swords and there are loads of good tutorials on the process.
It does depend a good bit on what kind of sword you're wanting to shorten, and how much you're wanting to take off. Exactly which sword will you be operating on?

Would only weaken the sword if it got hot and the heat treat was ruined. It's generally much easier to remove steel from the tang to shorten a sword than from the blade. Unless you're wanting something unusual it shouldn't be a big deal and not terribly hard to do yourself.

well let me answer randomnobody first it will be a katana. and to sanmarc im in southern california. and the sword is 28.1 inches im looking to size it down to 26 inches

Ok, Since you have a japenes blade, I would ask the question in the Estern sword section, I think Samsalvalty will be able to help ya............SanMarc.
You can shorten it from the tip, so you can keep the mountings the same.

Oh, shoot, Japanese (-style) swords have quite the history of being shortened. I'm not sure if there are many services (nihonzashi, maybe?) that would shorten your sword for you, but I'm sure you can find some info on how it's done online. The Japanese term used to indicate that a blade has been shortened is "(o-)suriage" but I'm not sure if the same word is used for the process of shortening...either way try searching google; I'm not sure if anybody here has shortened a katana, but there are plenty of Euro shortening threads. Sam might offer some assistance, and possibly Mr. Dan Davis, as well. I'm sure there aee others (whose names are escaping me right now ) who could help. Perhaps start a new thread in, or PM a mod to move this one to the customization section. Oh, and I, personally, wouldn't shorten from the tip down. Too much extra work and too much risk to the blade, depending how it's made (DH ot TH for starters...); nakago up is pretty much the only way. You'll have to make a new tsuka, though, and adjust your tsuba etc. to fit, as well as drill a new hole (or holes) for your mekugi-ana.

As I am finding out with a WW II katana given to me, they shorten then from the nakago (handle). Mine has been shortened 3 maybe 4 times. It does not appear to me that the blades has been weakened in any way, and who knows what the sword has seen or done Don't know if this helps or not. Sparky
