Well, my wife has put her foot down and vetoed any sword buying on my part until I get her her own sword set. So here's the difficulty, she practices Middle Eastern Dance so I'm needing a set of two scimitars one with a dulled blade for dancing and one suitable for cutting practice. While Cold Steel's Shamshir is an excellent cutting sword it doesn't have the correct balance for dance practice, and Hanwei has a Scimitar www.casiberia.com/product_details.asp?id=SH2354 that has the proper balance for dancing but does not come with a sharpened equivalent that can be used for cutting. I actually need a matched set so that both swords would have the same handling characteristics. And like always, I'm too broke to have anything custom made (unless somebody is willing to take payments over time lay-away style). Anybody got any ideas on how to solve this dilemma? BTW here is an example of how a scimitar needs to balance for MED.

Your wife does MED, that is awesome dude. If you're not able to go the custom route (matched sharp and blunt) - get two Hanwei's and sharpen one of them. I just bought my wife the SH Practical, she loves it. Good luck.

I actually want that very scimitar... but even with the 15% it's cheeper at Kult of Athena or a couple other places then at MRL. Maybe they will have one for even less... if so, I'm grabing it.

Yeah the wife doing MED is pretty awesome.... It's why I'm avoiding SCA events I don't want her captured immediately, and I'm not sure my dueling skills are up to task against shield bearing opponents, I study Taijiquan sword - it's an unarmored style. Been thinking about that with the Hanwei's though I emailed the company and they said they would "discourage" cutting practice with that particular blade. Something about the hardening and heat treatment.

Swords for those activities require different qualities then a real sword. Doesn´t mean you can´t do it...just you won´t get the best out of it. Personally, I would get one for dance and one for cutting and not worry about them being matching pairs. It´s not like she gonna be belly dancing while cutting...so get the tool that best fits the job. As for the SCA...well since you´ll get to determine the terms of the duel in that case, you can jut duel single sword and use your vast advantage in that style vs the average SCA to beat them hehe .

The main reason I was hoping to get matched set (of sorts) was so both would have similar handling characteristics for better training crossover. I just saw Strongblade.com had a sharpened scimitar similar to the Hanwei that might be worth checking out.

She doesn't need a particularly well-balanced sword, all she needs is a big blob of blu-tac on her head.

If my wife danced like that I would sell all my swords, buy her one for dancing and stay inside all day enjoying the show and ravaging her

The swords that are used in the first vid are special made for dancing. Your wife would need to get one if she was going to do that. I have seen some at some ren faires and they are balanced different than a real sword.

I've seen dancers use real swords for the same type of dance and they work just as well. The Hanwei is actually designed for it if you read the description.

Talk to matt at BKS he might be able to help you. The first vid was a beautiful demonstration and you are a very lucky man indeed

I keep forgetting about Bks I will have to check them out. However, my wife had been talking to Raven Studios and they swore they could make a wooden trainer with the correct balance so that might solve half my prob right there. Anyway, another kick arse sword dance

I wish I could get my wife to do that... Actually, my wife started this as both a way to lose weight and to help with a pinched sciatic nerve in her back. MED actually has many of the health benefits normally ascribed to martial arts like Taiji (Tai Chi), or exercises like yoga, so that may help convince people to take an interest. BTW, the woman in the most recent vid, started learning it as a way to recover from injuries do to an auto accident - now she is one of the world's top dancers, go figure.
