A fantastic read, Gaffer. I particularly enjoyed the level of detail you went into on the fit and finish.
On a completely unrelated note, awesome hair. I miss my long hair, but it was nowhere near as nice as yours. Karma for making me genuinely envious.

Great review... +1. I've always though this sword would be a bit heavy and likely whippy for a single handed sword... it just always looked off-balance to me in pictures and I am fearfull of most windlass blades over 30 in long. I wonder if the sword would feel as good for me, being only 5'10. My Castile sword has similar dimensions, but is a bit heavier... and I find that sword is a bit much single handed for me. Maybe I just need to workout more. ;D Hows the bevel on the edge from Kilt of Athena? I've not used their sharpening service before.

I am not sure I would be "fearful" :>), the blade really is pretty nice, though a heavier blade would probably thrust better. I will admit though, this sword is about as long and heavy that I would want in a single handed sword. I am very pleased with the bevel. In fact your question prompted me to add to my review (more info there). Here is a picture of the edge. According the Kult of Athena they had to order my sword in sharpened, so I don't think they do the actual sharpening. That is probably why they add a week to the shipping time. -gaffer

Glad to see this sword reviwed. I'm considering it as a father's day gift for my grandfather, he's been wanting a 'classic' medieval sword, early era, and from what I've seen this fits the bill. (May get one for myself too.) Incidentally, you said that the scabbard was all leather..any chance you're planning on making a wood-cored scabbard for the blade? I'd love to see pictures, based on some of your work. I'd love even more to see a video showing you carving the core. Well done! (Edit. +1 to you for an excellent showing)

Hi Yeoldegaffer. Good sword choice. I have own it myself for a few years now. I believe that they did a good job of naming it because I think it is a "classic" as you can get.
There is a design flaw in the hilt construction and I am wondering if they corrected it on the latter models. The grip is not perfectly sized to the tang so it rotates a bit. The peen on my mine also gets loose and I have to hammer it down. The loosening peen would not be a problem if the grip did not rotate over the tang but as it is, it can put the edge alignment off. Keeping the peen tight, will help minimize this rotation.
As far as the swords weight and balance, it is meant to break men in mail. I won't cut mail but is will break bone well. That sword hits like a ton of bricks on its edge. You can't just arm it, the blow has to come from the lower body. You have to rotate your hips into the blow. The off hand has to compensate for that rotation so that the shield stays in front of you covering your body.
I don't like the sharpening job they did on that sword. I think I did a better job on my own with a $1 sharpening stone. My edge looks a lot more natural. You can't tell it has an edge. The steel is very hard, I have crumpled up mettle tubs with almost no edge damage. The rotational speed on that sword is amazing because of its length. Like I said, it hits like a ton of bricks.
It was a good value when I bought it at $185, even better at $145.

Gaffer, that was a well written and easy-to-read review; I like when people are excited about their swords, it flows from your words. It is obvious you are quite taken with it- I feel you. I've admired that sword since I first saw it in MRL's catalog- especially after the torture tests that Bill (tsafa) put it through when he first got it.
I went with a discontinued cut-and-thrust that Windlass had put out just before this debuted; of the two it is obvious that I got the crappy one. Ah well, live and learn, right?
+1 from me.

I'd love even more to see a video showing you carving the core. Thank you, Yes, I do plan on making a scabbard and belt for this one. I don't have a chape yet, so I won't be able to work with the wood until I get it as I need to fit the wood to the chape. They sure are hard to track down! I will be more than happy to take some detailed pictures of carving the wood. I am not sure about a video, I can do that, but it might be very long :>). You might not have seen my other thread on scabbard making, which I do have some instructions on constructing a wood core scabbard. /index.cgi?board=swordcustom&action=display&thread=9402-gaffer
