Hello, today I'll be giving a review of the musashi rosewood shirasaya katana.
I've bought myself 2 musashi shirasaya's from ebay due to its cheaper delivery rating to Europe.
The swords where delivered 14 days after payment in a tight cartonwrapped box inside the swords were wrapped in sword bags. The dealer said to include a cleaning kit and a stand but they weren't there after a quick talk the dealer send in them realising it was his fault.
First impressions:
Both swords are in keen condition as they come out of the box both fith very well in their saya no gap between the tsuka and the saya.
When removing the saya's the both swords are nice to look at the hamon is fake offcourse but it still looks nice.
Fit and finish:
The overall fit is good nice and snug inside the saya, the finish on the blade is good as well no dents, scratches or chips on the edge. The katana with the lower hamon (slimmer one) has a little bith of loosness in the tsuka but not that its that noticabel. After taking off the tsuka the tang is open and you can see just where the habaki fits that the finish here is a bit rougher then on the visual parts of the blade.
The saya opening is plain but very nicely finished
There isn't much to say much about the fittings since there really aren't any, the habaki is okay and the mekugi fit well. The rosewood matches the blade very well in my opinion.
Cutting ability and handling:
I tested both swords on several botlles I made some cuts through the top of the bottle (that harder part) and it went throught with not that much of resitance both blades didn't suffer damage from this. Doing some regular cuts and thrusts on waterfilled bottles gave good results for this cheap swords. Clean cuts on all targets I can't give other results like on tatami since I don't have any. The swords are papercutting sharp.
The swords handle nicely since they have a very low weight the tachi kaze (sword sound) is also very appealing
Extra's:
The sword stands and cleaning kits were very well no scratches on the stands and a nicely put together cleaning kit put into a plastic back. 4 extra mekugi where included.
Overall rating:
Historical accuracy: N/A
Structural integrity: 3/5
Fit and finish: 3,5/5
Handling: 4/5
Value for money: 4/5
The ratings seem high but its because in my own opinion The blades are better then expected for this price range.
Would I recommend this sword: Yes I surely would keeping in mind these blades aren't great but they are awesome value for the money you pay. It probably is a good idea to make a cheap tsuka for it with some decent wrapping since this tsuka is kinda slippery if it gets wet. Its a great cheap cutter and fun to have if you ask me.
grtz
