Nice review Bishop...+1 to you.
It really illustrates why Hanwei is top of the pile doesn't it?

Yes it really does, I honestly wish I had gone through with the purchase of a PK so many years ago but I missed the chance at the time I'm glad to finally have had a chance to get my hands on one of their fantastic Katana.

Nice review dude. Good looking sword. That tsuba really goes well with their habaki and blade. I never had a Hanwei yet, but the blade looks like the same blade as what's on the PK classic, am I wrong? Once more, sweet score.
+1.

I don't think so, I think the PK models have a cross filed kissaki, but don't quote me on that. I would also like to add that the width of this blade is probably nearly 1 1/2 inches at the base which is massive, hell maybe it's 2 inches, I don't have a measuring tape on me.

Great review bishop! Beautiful sword, like the dragon themed tsuba.

Hanwei uses almost the same geometry for all their katana. There will be slight modifications to width, thickness etc but the geometry is very similar. As such some may look at the swords (especially in photos where there isn't another katana to compare with) and say the blades look very similar, perhaps even one and the same.
That is not the case in this though. Bishop is right, most of the Practical line have fake yokote... the Shinto has a true yokote. This blade is also definitely wider (to facilitate easier cutting) and thinner (to keep it light). When compared with say a Practical Plus the differences in the blade will be evident but not by itself unless you're quite familiar with Hanwei's products.
Really its a nice katana - not my cup of tea - but a nice katana nonetheless.

found a measuring device, it's 1 1/2 inches at the base above the habaki, and just above 1 inch at the yokote. This blade is also definitely wider (to facilitate easier cutting) and thinner (to keep it light). It's basically just a normal Shinto except they "squash the blade down" so it's thinner and wider, but it would seem that they don't use any more or any less steel on this to the other.

Bishop, great review, great pictures, I wish I could award review points for it but as even wingwiti's price is above $300 I just can't at this time. Still, you did a great job with the pictures you took, and really brought out the high points of this model. Nicely done.

Oh no problem, I wasn't really expecting any review points. I just like doing it.

Congrats on your new Shinto! I really like those dragon fuchi and kashira, even though I am not usually a big fan of that theme for everything on the katana. I am pretty sure those menuki are called ken, probably with dragons again. Can we get you to report on a comparison cutting of all your katana?
Nice review bishop! +1

Well, first of all, I took it apart today for inspection, went ahead and turned the Tsuba upside down so the dragon's face is facing the blade(makes more sense to me) very nice and crisp signature as well as some other numbers, very thick tang, very thick. Even though the Tsuka is on there like a friggen clamp there's no cracks in it, which is a first for me. As for cutting across all my katana, I haven't used this one yet, I would prefer to wait until I upgrade to tatami. Bottles leave unsightly little scuffs that just drive me bonkers Though I can say that judging by the geometry of the blade, this shinto will outcut everything else I've used. Maybe I'll pickup some cheap beach mats sometime or a few tatami. thanks for karma and kind words

Great review thanks. It was actually good timing, because I have been looking at that exact sword now lately. I've been trying to decide on my first sword, in the $500 range, and that is my latest choice. I want to try a Hanwei for obvious reason, and I want a good solid sword, no hi, for cutting soft targets. This is the one I came to choose, and now I got a nice review with great close up pics. That's one thing I don't like about the Hanwei stuff, is there have horrible pictures, and only like 2 of them.
Thanks

Yeah no problem, glad I could help. This sword really does feel fragile too, which is why I don't want to cut anything but Tatami, I tried it again a box earlier and it sliced into it clean, my other swords kind of tore into it.
