1070 Konron Forge Custom Katana REVIEW
When is was testing my 9260 katana from the Konron forge, I became more and more a fan of this forge. Now you can make your own custom katana at this forge. I’ll order one very soon but this one is customized by Dave for us.
This katana is a 1070 steel sword with differentional hardening. These swords are not really suitable for multiple tatami targets or bamboo. They are however ideal for an iaido practitioner or somebody who like to do some occasional soft (target) cutting. The reason why they are not suitable for lot of (heavy) cutting is the fact that the body of the blade is a bit too soft so it would be easy to bend your blade if your technique is not so good. Now, these are* no wallhanger type of swords* and you can expect the same quality, finish and sharpness as all of the other Konron katanas.
DESIGN, FIT and FINISH
Stats:
Blade length : 73 cm
Overall length : 100 cm
POB : 14 cm after tsuba
Weight : 1125 grams
The Blade
A deep bo-hi runs the length of this curved blade. The blade came sharp. Beautiful Hamon. This hamon is beautiful waved.
The kissaki is well defined and attractive, coming to a razor sharp point that would be useful for stabbing. The hamon runs thru the kissaki.
The Tsuka
The tsuka is wood wrapped with real rayskin and wrapped with real Japanese blue cotton ito. The ito is a high quality cord. The fuchi is a beautiful stripe pattern. The tsuka is single pegged.
The fuchi is a solid steel fitting with a nice detailed stripe pattern.
The seppa are made of red copper
The menuki are real Japanese fittings. I don’t know what’s the theme of this menuki (I’m sorry for this).
The rayskin is very attractive.
The Kashira
Has a stripe patern. No plastic fittings!
The Tsuba
This is a solid, simple tsuba but fits very well on this katana.
The Saya
Black matt, textured wood, no scratches, no defects. Not much else to add there, it looks really good.
The sageo is a high quality, thick cord but not very tightly wrapped. You can move the sageo, but let us be honest, isn’t this a beautiful sageo on this katana?
A nice touch is the golden colored shitidome, which gives the saya that dash of color and character.
The Konron katana fits very well in the saya. As we all know,I prefer to have a snug fit and not have the katana fall out if turned upside down. The koiguchi (saya opening) is completely lacquered like the saya.
TESTING
I first tested the sword on plastic bottles (different kinds) filled with water.
NICE CLEAN CUTS!!!
Then I hung up a bottle on a cord
As you can see, NICE clean cut!
2 minutes of fun….
CONCLUSION
Is the Konron a decent cutter? Yes, but not for all types of cutting targets! The Konron katana seems to be a very well built beautiful looking sword. Is this katana a wallhanger? No! sure not! Does this katana has a special place in my house? YES, it’s too beautiful to put it away in a dark corner.
THE VERDICT
Historical Accuracy: N/A
Fit and Finish: 4/5 (only 1 peg!)
Handling: 5/5
Structural Integrity: 5/5
Value for Money: 5/5
OVERALL: 4/5 (Excellent)
WHERE TO BUY
If you make your own custom katana and you’ll choose the same options my katana has, this Konron 1070 katana normally sell at 618 euro at www.samurai-sword-shop.com. I’m not gone tell you how much I paid mine because otherwise you all will become jealous. The only thing I could say is that he’s in our 300 mark.
