I'm not much for European swords, especially rapiers and their like but I have to say that's a gorgeous sword. Your thrusting is good although your cutting seems to need practice. At the moment the two main issues I see in your cutting is that you're trying to cut about half way down the blade. You should try using the upper quarter of the blade as that would have more velocity and therefore be more apt to cut. Even a razor sharp sword will flub a cut if it doesn't get up to the necessary speed to cut. Anyway nice review. +1 for your efforts.

I also own this sword and one thing that is great about it is the tang, very beefy for a rapier. Great review.

Nice stats! Looks pretty historical to me on paper. From the pics the cast parts give it an aged look I find quite attractive... what a nice piece.

Hey Charles. BEAUTIFUL sword! I love the filligree. I like the blade too. You could cut with this. You didn't mention enhancing the edge before the test cutting, did you? My rapier had a blunt-as edge. Once sharpened it *can* cut water bottles. I flubbed the first cut coz I didn't cut fast enough, and it warped the blade (I'd love to see that on Hi Res slo-mo) Mine had a much flimsier balde than yours too.
My observation of your vid is that you simply weren't cutting fast enough. I'm suss on your alignment but can't tell properly form the low quality vid. Probably a factor of lack of confidence. Maybe get it really sharp, then get your eye in with a few cuts on a katana, then when you are in tune, move onto the rapier. The other thing is that horizontal cuts are harder. Cutting on a downward angle presses the target into the stand somewhat, allowing you to chop through before it flies.
Good luck. Rapier joy to you!

That's a real nice looking rapier Charles. Great review. I have not seen too many people attempt cutting with a rapier. It does not seem to bad at all. It is obviously well constructed.
Thanks for a great review.

Hi, Thanks to all for the kind words and karma. Thanks also to Brendan and Katanasam for the advice on cutting. I do appreciate it. Brendan, I did sharpen the blade slightly, but I've never sharpened a rapier before. I couldn't seem to get it to the paper cutting stage - but it was close. I think I'll try again with an accusharp or something similar. There is one around here somewhere - if I can find it.

Please don't!!!! It doesn't have to be paper cutting sharp. I don't think I can get them that sharp either, or even close. It's just the technique that needs honing. If you do have to refine a blade from blunt - just draw file it to an edge, then go 180, then 240. That will make it fine for cutting purposes.

A most excellent review! I was complaining just the other day that rapiers aren't featured enough around these parts.

Very nice review, Charles. That's a beautiful sword... uh... rapier. It's still a sword to me. I like it. And such fine detail for the price! I would expect to pay at least that much for such a fine looking guard and pommel. The fact that you got a very functional, complete sword for that price is really great. Kudos for attempting the cuts too.

For a long time, I've been wanting to get the PC Taza-Cup Hilt Rapier from KultofAthena, but somehow my budget always got 'intercepted' by other impromptu buying spree The lack of detailed handling info (prior to your kind review) also makes me hesitant. Your review has strengthen my resolution to get this piece..... real... real... soon ;D Thank you & +1 Karma going your way...

Truly a stunning first review - great photos, videos and write up - very much the complete package! I hope to see many more. +30 review points and +1 karma (and yup, I know what it is like to be bitten by the rapier bug. I never really appreciated them until I got one myself!).
