Geremy Gulino--- Auburn, New York,USA
hello to all i was searching around ebay and came across a site called ronin katana
search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZronin-katanas
this is the site, i decided to give them a try to see if we can find any other lower end katana that are worth getting ;D
i got the model sold as HAND FORGED JAPANESE SAMURAI SWORD HANDMADE KATANA
it has no name i guess
for 80$ delivered to door in a week not a bad deal.it arrived in a nice shipping box
and the inner box inside shipping box
inside this box the katana was packaged nice and snug with styrofoam holding it in
here is the certificate of authenticity
tsuka(hilt ) length 11 and 1/2 "
blade (tip to habaki) 26 and 3/4 "
overall length 39 and 1/2 "
weight is under 2 pounds un sheathed
POB about 4-5" from tsuba(guard)
the tsuka (hilt ) is nicely done on first look the wrap is nylon as advertised and looks tight (looks)the diamonds could be better and the ray skin is real and better than ive seen on some of my more costly ones and has 2 bamboo pins holding it in.
the knot at the end looks well tied and the "gold" fittings add a nice look while not goin over the top.
the fittings i believe are blackened copped but a common design that is attractive enough.
the saya is deep lacquered black with nylon siego(sp) tied around it with same "gold" fittings , and no rattle when blade is sheathed.
the mouth of saya shows the wood
the tsuba(guard) is nicely done is is blacked iron i believe or some kind of hard blackened metal.it is similar to the tsuba on the oniyuri but it is in-fact a size smaller .
now in that first photo of the tsuba u may be able to see some white stuff around the brass spacers(seppa?), it turns out the blade is epoxied in to the tsuka well not preferred i know that it is held together well
the blade is very nice with a mirror polish on it and a nice blood groove running the length of the blade , the hamon is wire brushed it looks and does nothing to really catch ones eye, but still nicley done, with no real complaints except that it appears to have a small beveled edge
the polish on the tip i thought looked pretty good as well compared to some other ones ive seen.
the dry handleing of this sword is that it is very fast and light very easy to use and the blade make a beautiful whoosh when swung you can really hear the grooves singing in the wind ;D
now for the cutting , the beveled edge gave me some concern but the masahiro with a bevel did better than i thought so i figured it can go to bad ,,, right
well i started out on a cardboard juice carton
batter up it flew about 15 feet didnt even go all way thro.
maybe i just had really bad form on that one, so i went to my old stand by , hanging bottle from swing set
no clean cuts here
at this point i was getting a little let down to say the least.
then i went for the milk jug ;D
the thinner plastic went down like nothing ;D finally i thought i cut something clean,,lol
after this little "cutting" session i looked down at my tsuka and the wrap had shifted alot, there is NO glue holding down the wrap and nylon likes to slide the knot at the end still looks tight and no rattles but i did not like that the wrap has nothing to help hold it tight oh well for the price i cant complain to much, but i do ,,lol)
historical accuracy 3-5
fit and finish 3-5(blade only partially sharpened )
handling 5-5
structural integrity 5-5(epoxy holding blade in)
money for value 4-5
over all i have to give this a 3 and a half out of 5
it is till a very nice looking katana and with a little sharpening and maybe a rewrapped grip a good beater ;D
thank you for reading...
