Cheness SGC Yamakami
Tayler, Seattle, WA
Wassup people? This is my first review, and thanks to Paul I was finally convinced that this sword would suit my needs. I got this sword for $250 on the SBG store.
I bought this sword about 3 or 4 months ago because of its broad blade. Before this sword came I had a Cheness Shura wakizashi that was dying to have a BIG brother. Most of my friends loved Viking swords and they thought that katanas were wimpy and small compared to the Viking swords… but I sure proved them wrong!
It arrived to its new home in about a week. It came in a nice golden dragon box. Inside was a sword bag containing the sword within it. Taking the sword out of the scabbard was one of the most exciting parts of my life lol, and there the beast was, in my hands, shining light in my eyes (it was B-E-A-uutifull). The sword felt a little bit tip heavy, and it made me feel like I was holding a Samurai sword on steroids…which was fine with me. The handling was alright. It wasnt too heavy. Though slight tip heavy
Here is a photo of it in the box when it arrived:
Stats:
Name: Yamakami Katana (Mountain Guardian)
Blade: Through Hardened 9260 Silicon Alloy Carbon Spring Steel.
Overall Length (+ Saya): 42"
Treatment: Full Hand Forged, Through Hardened, Oil Quenched, Hand Polished
Finish: Tameshigiri Polish
Blade Dimension: 28" Length, 0.25" Width, 1.50" Height
Sori (Curvature): 0.7"
Weight: 2 lbs 15 oz (no saya), 3 lbs 14 oz (with saya), 9 lb shipping weight.
Tsuba/Fuchi/Kashira Blackened Steel "Mount Fuji" Tsuba
Balance Point: 6" above tsuba
Tsuka/Ho: 11" Wood
Tsuka Ito: Brown Cotton
Mekugi: 2 X Wood (Double Pinned)
Same: Real Ray Skin Panel Wrap
Saya: 30.5" Black Glossy Lacquered Medium Hardwood
The Blade:
The blade is very big and beastly which is just the way I like it. The blade isn’t very long but the broadness makes up for it. It came with no marks or rust; the blade came clean. It is polished with a Tameshigiri polish which to me appears a mixture of a mirror and a satin finish. It has a nice etched hamon which makes a nice pattern. I bent it maybe 45 degrees out of alignment and then it snapped back to true. Here are some pictures of me and my mom holding the blade.
The Grip:
The sword came with a brown ito and real ray skin panel wrap same which is quite nice. The brown ito makes the sword look meaner than black wrap. The tsuka is much broader than a normal tsuka because of the blades’ wideness, and the tsuka wood is very very thick for assured durability.
Tsuba (guard)
The tsuba is blackened steel. It has the cap of Mount Fuji on it as its main design. I would consider the tsuba quite plain.
Scabbard:
The Scabbard is covered in a cool black shiny lacquer but it is a finger print magnet. It is of course much wider than the standard scabbard because of the blade.
Cutting and Thrusting:
The edge is much sharper than Cheness’s standard katanas and it can slice paper easily
Here's a small video of me cutting some wood with minimal force.
this is a video is of me cutting numerous targets. I don't use power or technique to show you what the blade can do by itself. There are some pretty cool bloopers too. kinda.
Conclusion:
This sword is outstanding and the edge retention is no different than my Shura. It is very tough and durable and I recommend it to anyone that likes amazing cutting power and isn’t looking for something traditional.
Historical Accuracy: N/A
Fit and Finish: 5/5
Handling: 4/5
Structural Integrity: 6/5 (duh, its 9260 spring steel from Cheness.)
Value for Money: 5/5
Overall: 5/5
