Very entertaining review. I'm glad your sword did not shatter/break/hellicopter on the cutting tests. Your cd collection goes well with your sword too. +1 Thanks for taking the "plunge".

Your cd collection goes well with your sword too. +1 Thanks . When someone designs a katana with 1980's and/or 2000-era designs, I have music for those, too ;D. Thanks for taking the "plunge". No problem; this plunge was worth the money . --Edward

Nice review! And I like the fittings of this katana. And also, +1 for the switchblade symphony CD. I am actually listening to them now.

I have been waiting for this since you mentioned you were going to give it a shot... like Oni said, I admire your willingness to 'take a risk' on an unknow sword with a suspect reputation. I did it myself awhile ago with the Ebay Katana... and I think those of us that can do so should do so now and again... or we won't find the 'hidden gems'. Your reveiw was VERY entertaining... I did NOT skip to the end because I found it was humorous and well writen, it kept my attention the whole way threw. Great pics. I'll have to ask you how you did that photobucket video... I tried that once myself and failed, in epic fassion. +1 from me, big time. I look forward to hearing about the other one made from 1060 steel.

Nice review! And I like the fittings of this katana. Thanks . One of the reasons why I bought this katana was *because* of the unusual fittings. It will be interesting to see if other forges making low-budget katana will attempt non-traditional fittings as well; I'm keeping my eye out for that. And also, +1 for the switchblade symphony CD. I am actually listening to them now. I saw them live once; it was definitely worth it . --Edward

It looks like it links back to the video on the Photobucket site. --Edward

i'll admit i seem somewhat impressed for what it is... what was the price on this again?
and the double groove isn't a modern thing. the little groove like that is a so hi... two of them being... a double sohi. kensei swords are putting it on a lot of their swords. MAS did a shobu that had double sohi as well.

i'll admit i seem somewhat impressed for what it is... what was the price on this again? $137.99 at True Swords. and the double groove isn't a modern thing. the little groove like that is a so hi... two of them being... a double sohi. kensei swords are putting it on a lot of their swords. MAS did a shobu that had double sohi as well. So if I understand this correctly, a big grove is a bo-hi, and a small groove under it, a so-hi? So on this sword, two small grooves are a double so-hi? Also, do Kensei and MAS put both so-hi grooves on both sides of the blade, like United did with this weapon? --Edward

Excellent review Edward! Thorough, entertaining, well written and well and profusely illustrated! Another +1... It seems like you well and truly got your money's worth on this one, so congratulations, and thanks again for taking the chance. I completely agree with you about fake hamon and cosmetic kissaki- this blade looks much better without them. What do you think of the edge sharpness? I'm just wondering why you think you had trouble with the full mats. Looking forward to Reisz' review of the 1060 now.... Cheers Marc E

I'm just wondering why you think you had trouble with the full mats. I don't know why I had trouble with full mats. The Shikyo cut through half-mats and plastic bottles with ease, but I had problems with full-mat targets. I'm pretty sure that part of the problem is my form; however, when I used another, higher-priced katana on the same tatami mats during this testing (full and half-mats), it went through all of them with no problems. To test the sharpness after the cutting exercises, the Shikyo still cut through paper quite easily. If anyone is interested in buying a Shikyo, I invite them to try it on full tatami mats as well and post your results. Perhaps your results will be better than mine . --Edward

Good review, Edward! To be honest, I had never heard of "so-hi" until you mentioned it.
Kudos!

Good review, Edward! To be honest, I had never heard of "so-hi" until you mentioned it. Kudos! Thanks :-). Like you, I hadn't heard of a double so-hi either. So far, I haven't seen any historical precedents for this. Also, thank you again for helping me disassemble and reassemble the weapon for this review. --Edward

so does this mean united black might be able to save their image? It's possible. The Shikyo looks promising; now it's just a matter of seeing how the 1060 Yoru performs. I'm guessing that, with the non-traditional furniture, they might be selling specificially to the 'backyard samurai' market. I doubt these katana would be accepted in any dojo, even if the Shikyo is an idicator that they do perform pretty well. Frankly, I'm looking forward to more reviews of UC Black products. --Edward

Edward, has anyone offered you a translation of the mei? Nope. Nor of the symbols on the blade, either. Are you offering to translate? --Edward

Ah but if I could do that, I would have offered it long ago. I'll run it by some friends this weekend.
