Musashi Model SS-809BK
by Dave Smith TX USA
Introduction:
I was shopping www.swordnarmory.com for some sword stands, Sharpening stones, Cleaning kit , Sword Tsuba Removal Maintenance Kit and some sword oil. well i noticed the free shipping at $125 and was still aways away from that so i decided to pick up one of these Musashi's with the real hamon everyone's been talking about. so after explaining to g/f how it was a better deal to add the sword for the free shipping i placed my order.
And with the speedy service of SwordnArmory i received my package 6 days later. Everything was well packaged. sorry i don't have any pics of when i received everything camera's memory card took a dump so i had to retake them.
Swords Spec's :
Blade/Nagasa Length: 28 1/2"
Handle/Tsuka Length: 11"
Overall Length: 40 1/2"
Guard/Tsuba Width: 0.20"
POB (Point of Balance): Unknown
Weight: approx 2.5 - 3 lbs
Blade: 1060 Carbon Steel
As soon as i pulled the sword from the saya i saw what everyone see's in real hamon's. it was impressive and to think this sword cost less than $80. the over all feel of the sword is solid it doesn't even rattle in the saya * something my $240 oniyuri did right out of the box.
Fittings:
The blade of the sword has been constructed from 1060 high carbon steel with a Maru lamination and has been heat treated.
sorry about the messy blade i havent wiped the oil off it yet. But isn't that a nice hamon for 80 bucks ?
Tsuka:
its nice looking but its thin and hurts your fingers when you hold the sword. its the only thing i dont like about the sword.
you can see the logo on the seppa and the Habaki doesn't look cheap and fits very snug in the saya.
Tsuka:
the tsuba is tightly wrapped with cotton ito over real eel skin Same. the menuki looks like gold colored plastic but what do you expect at this price range.
the saya is your normal glossy coating
the Sage-o is a standard cotton wrap.
the Fuchi and Kashira are what you also expect at this price range but doesn't take away from the swords look.
Test cutting:
none as of yet ( been using my XL:D)
Conclusions:
This is a good sword with a real hamon and for the price you can't beat it.
Pros
real hamon
soild feel
tight fit in the saya
Cons
tsuba hurts fingers and its my falt because i ordered the model with it. lol
next time you need to reach that free shipping mark remember what ya can get for a few extra bucks.
here is a pic of the Musashi with my Oniyuri and my XL
i hope you find this review helpful
